Our Story

The Shantia Alexandria Foundation was founded in May 2020 in honor of my sister, Shantia, whom we tragically lost to suicide in August 2013. Shantia was a free-spirited soul with a contagious smile that could brighten anyone’s day. Her warmth and energy were truly special, and losing her was incredibly difficult. However, it also opened our eyes to a harsh reality—suicide is often an avoided and rarely discussed topic, especially in the African American community.

At the time, we didn’t know where to turn or how to cope with our loss. That pain and uncertainty led us to create this foundation—not only to honor Shantia’s memory but to serve as a beacon of light for others. Our mission is to educate, support, and provide access to resources for individuals struggling with mental health challenges.

Through our foundation, we offer mental health resources, community events, and educational programs to raise awareness about mental wellness and suicide prevention. More than anything, we strive to create a safe space where people can express themselves freely without judgment. We believe that together, we can foster a healthier, more compassionate community.

You are not alone. We are here to help.

Meet The Founder

Hi, I’m Tavia Farmer, the Founder of the Shantia Alexandria Foundation and a passionate advocate for mental health and community empowerment. My passion for this work is personal. In 2013, I lost my sister Shantia to suicide, and that loss reshaped my life. From grief, I found purpose an dedicated myself to creating safe, supportive spaces where mental health is prioritized and stigma is shattered.

Born and raised in Atlanta, I proudly carry my city’s heartbeat in everything I do. I earned my degree in Behavioral Learning and Psychology from Georgia State University, and I am currently pursuing my Master’s in Social Work to deepen my impact and strengthen my ability to serve individuals and families facing mental health challenges. My mission is to uplift and empower those affected by mental health challenges through education, outreach, and community-driven initiatives.

Through the Shantia Alexandria Foundation, I lead community-centered programs, host transformative events, and connect people to vital resources that foster healing, resilience, and hope. Every event, every conversation, and every initiative is rooted in the belief that healing happens when people feel seen, supported, and heard.

This work is not just what I do—it’s who I am. If you’ve found your way here, know that you’re not alone. Together, we can change the way the world sees mental health—starting right here in our community. I’m honored to do this work—and I’m even more grateful to do it with you. Lets WORK!!
